I have been using some of my ornaments for over 20 years. One of them is a paper ornament with a photo of my son (he made it in Kindergarten). Other ornaments were given to me as gifts by various people. I kept them individually wrapped and marked until the year my oldest daughter and my son decided to "put up" the tree while I was working. That year all the ornament labels and wrappings were thrown out and it made me sad to think that I'd probably eventually forget the year I received it and who gave it.

I think tradition helps build strong family values and relationships and I can't imagine putting up a tree without at least some of my older ornaments and decorations. However I do try to update a bit by adding at least one new ornament each year.

You might also consider adding an extra tree (if you have the room) use your old ornaments in one room and create a new theme in another room.

I have some that I have used every year and some that I buy. I buy one every year to commemorate that year. I have some that my kids made me almost 20 years ago. Then I have some that my mother gave me before she died. Yes, I believe that Christmas decorations should be a sentimental thing and vary from person to person.

Since my family moved a few years ago, obviously we just completely overhauled how we decorate the house! But other than that:

Nowadays -- and back when we lived in the old house -- we rarely make major changes to the decoration. Sure, we might do more or less depending on how spirited and/or overworked we're feeling that year, but it's mostly the same -- a tree in the living room, wreaths in their places, garlands in their places, mantle decorations, caroler figurines, etc. (We go a bit all-out, always have.)

But sometimes we'll change up the theme of the Christmas tree, for instance. This year, it's decorated in brown and gold to match how we've furnished the living room. It used to be blue, purple and red (the ornaments, that is.) But it's still the same kind of tree, and the general theme of the ornaments (both the traditional kind and flowers/other stuff like that) is the same.
