Answered Conundrum Next Conundrum
I was in the grocery store today and saw a woman beating her child. What do you do when faced with this dilemma?
It wasn't a simple smack, but repeated punches on the child's back. The mother was also yelling and verbally abusing the child. I didn't know what to do or who to call. How do you even report someone when you don't have any information on them?

I would follow the person out to his or her car and get his or her licence plate number call and report that number in.
That is if I didn't instantly loose my marbles and start yelling to create a huge sceen in the store.
If the moment is gone . . . I don't know if it will be possible to report it.

I would do either of two things. I would say something to the women herself or better yet I would ask that managerment contact the athorities. I work in a local college and I have witnessed this only one time and that is what another workers and I decided to do was contact security. They took over from there, however I was unable to get the final resaults of the incident. That is one thing I can not stand to see is a small helpless child getting hit !! Not only does it hurt, but it is also extremely insulting and big time abuse.

Well for me, I make a statement to the mom. I have to tell you that my approach is not the best because I always get told to mind my own business. But that is ok because while she is berrating me, he hands are not on the child. Usually, I approach the child beater and tell them softly, "Look up and smile so that the cameras get a really good picture of you." One time I just simply said "REALLY?".
I don't know why people bring their kids to the store when it is a bad kid day. You see these kids crying because they are tired or not feeling well and then the parent will smack them, what, so they will feel better?. I have left my full cart at walmart many times because of bad kid days. I have even hired a sitter when I absolutley could not wait another minute to get groceries.
Don't misunderstand me. I do believe in corporal punishment but only as a last resort and it should never be excessive. But when I see a mom punching her child like you discribed, it makes me want to take the child and take him/her to the security officer of the store. That is just clear abuse and should never be tolerated.

I have spoken to the abuser at various times, but generally I try to get their description, and a license plate number. I then contact the police ( at 911) because this is an emergency situation, and as soon as I can, I also call CPS. Once I got to see the police talking the the parent in the parking lot...that was awesome!

I'd say something to the parent because it creates at least a slight pause in the abuse. It may even embarrass the parent so they might know what it feels like to be humiliated in public. Then I'd probably get all weepy and end up getting beat up. I'm a softy when it comes to kids.
I flinch when I even see parents yelling at kids, which is usually not necessary. I don't understand all of the rudeness; I've seen people jerking and dragging kids around by their arms and I wish I could say something. Everyone has bad days, both grown ups and kids. I can't think of any time I would have to treat a child like that.
