Personally, I assume everyone's asking a general question unless they state otherwise. It's presumptuous, in my opinion, to assume otherwise, especially if the questions are sensitive in nature. And by doing this, I can answer questions in ways that are applicable to anyone.

That said, some of my conundrums HAVE been personal, whether I've said it or not. I've asked quite a few, though, that they blend in. Which is good. It's nice to be able to get advice semi-anonymously!

Every question that someone asks would have to have inflicted them personally in some way for them to put the effort into finding the answer.

I assume that someone who starts out saying "What if" is asking a hypothetical question. I assume that a question that starts out "my boyfriend" MIGHT be a personal question. I always keep in mind that this is the internet, and is known for being a place that you can be anybody you want with any life you want. I look at it this way: If it's a real problem and they receive some good advice, great! If it's a hypothetical or generic question and it gets some good advice, also great.

Well all of my questions are something that interests me personally... at least to some extent. If it is me personally then I'll normally say so.... and if its hypothetical then I'll say so.

Generally it seems that the more convoluted the 'what if' question gets it seems like its a made up question

While I like Chronic_brain's answer "Every question that someone asks would have to have inflicted them personally in some way for them to put the effort into finding the answer," I must insert that not all questions that have been asked are always a direct question from the person writing them. They might be a question that a family member might have been asking, or a situation that someone we know is going through. Or it might be a question that the local/world news raises. These don't necessarily touch us personally, but they are interesting and difficult questions, which makes them worth asking.
