Selected due to the massive amount people who have it or will get it. Other considerations include the fact that it is deadly, the treatments are painful, and dieing of this is often a slow ordeal.

My selfish reason, it would save my grandfather's life.

Cancer as well. It takes an astonishing amount of lives, everyone from young children to the elderly. It is devastating to families. It is devastating to morale (it leaves and comes back). The treatment is god awful painful and risky.

Cancer is downright evil.

I vote for malaria. Malaria is a cyclic disease, it continually reoccurs every few days, with bouts of extreme sickness lasting 4-6 hours. It's caused by a plasmoidium, a microscopic organism.

"Each year, there are approximately 350–500 million cases of malaria killing between one and three million people, the majority of whom are young children in Sub-Saharan Africa."

Cancer is caused by so many things, I wasn't sure if you meant one disease or one problem...
