I can relate to this... but I actually gave him greeting cards not really gifts.
For several times, I left a card telling him what-nots and what I feel about him. This happens for like 4 months? We were good friends, he even told me about the card he's receiving! HAHA! He's just laughing about it while saying he has a stalker. XD
Then months after, I told him, through another card who his 'stalker' is. At first he can't believe it cause we're friends and that he's even telling me about the cards. At first, I admit I started to feel awkward near him. But our friendship didn't really suffered for what happened. He's still there for me when I need help though our relationship didn't become how I wanted it to be during those times.
UNTIL, three years later... he confessed that he fell in love with me. ^^ I never really expected that one happening. I thought I have no chance for him and we'll just be friends.
Next month, we'll be celebrating our second anniversary! Yay!!! ^^

Well... when I was in middle-school (called it Junior High back then) I had a crush on Alice B., the most fascinating and intelligent and beautiful girl in the seventh grade who hung out with the guys in the ninth grade... but she though I was a skinny, buck-toothed pencil-necked science geek... which I was.
On her birthday I took all the money I had saved, $150, which was a lot of money for a 13 year old back then, and bought a gold necklace with a pearl pendant, and I had my friend Peter drop it in front of her at lunch, saying it was from a secret admirer.
She opened it, looked at the labeling and the certification, showed it to her constant companion Cindy, they wondered at for a bit, and then Cindy caught me watching a bit too intently from across the room, whereupon she screamed loud over the whole cafeteria, "Oh my Gawd! Piglet bought Alice a gold-pearl necklace for her birthday!"
Whereupon Alice made a big scene out of how revoltingly disgusting is was, and the two of them made a theatrical production out of taking it into the girl's can and flushing it down the toilette.
That's when I learned that, if you're going to give secret gifts, it's not a secret unless it stays a secret, otherwise when it's found out, all things can go to hell much worse than if you'd just handed it over in public and taken the humiliation in the first place.

Not a gift per se, but I wrote a "love note" to a senior guy when I was a freshman. I signed it as a secret admirer because I was nervous about his response to me. We corresponded via letters for a week or so, and then I agreed to meet him after school to reveal myself. We ended up dating briefly, but ultimately, I realized he was a jerk.
