I think the refrigerator would be the most beneficial appliance to be invented.
Even in Africa today the health organizations have trouble keeping vaccines cool because they can't always get access to a fridge. It's saved countless lives by keeping food fresh and it saves food because it doesn't spoil as quickly. So for me the fridge is a pretty cool ( yes, pun intended :)
The least beneficial invention or appliance I would say is the clothes dryer. It wastes electricity and doesn't allow the sunlight to kill the germs on your clothes. Sunlight is free :) I understand if you live somewhere where its hard, but to me its a very wasteful appliance. I like the smell of clothes dried in the sun!

The smoke alarm has saved countless thousands of lives and has benefited the human race more than any other gadget or appliance.
Since widespread installation of smoke alarms began in the early 1990's, deaths by fire have been cut in half.
Your chances of surviving a fire in your home (where 80% of fire deaths occur) is increased by 50%.
In homes where fire deaths occur in spite of the presence of smoke alarms, only 37% were in working order.
There are two types of smoke alarms; ionization, which respond better to flaming fires, photoelectric, which respond better to smoking fires. You should have both.
Test your alarms once a month, and replace them twice a year on time change days.

The most harm? Cell phones. Thousands of deaths each year can be attributed to distracted driving or impaired ability (restricting use of hands). There is actually little or no difference between the number of accidents caused by hands free cell phones and ones held in the hand. It is the fact that sufficient attention is not being paid to driving that causes accidents.

Of course I meant change the batteries twice a year, not the entire smoke detector. Those should last 8-10 years.
