Is Thanksgiving just about the food or does your family emphasize its tradtion by talking about the historical background?

Do you talk with your children about the meaning of Thanksgiving? Do you discuss the past with guests (what might have happened during the first Thanksgiving and how the participants may have felt? Do you go out of your way and offer your services in another way during this holiday (i.e. at a soup kitchen for the homeless) to give thanks for what you have and show your respect and appreciation of others?

I have five children. Thanksgiving is a great time but now is evolving into something quote different. My two oldest are grown and out of college. My oldest is married so she goes from one family to the other. However, we keep certain traditions and that is helping others. In the morning we deliver some baked goods, canned goods and other items to people in need from a community service list. As a single Mom, I know how hard it is to get by--and wish I had the help over the past 9 years--so I always try to find a family with a working single Mom to help. My kids love this.
We do talk about how Thanksgiving came about because my youngest is 9 and loves the stories. It's a great day but a one of reflection as well---I lost both of my parents in the early 2000's so it's just my children and me now. Still it's a fabulous day to help others and enjoy a great meal together

It's been awhile since we've really had a family Thanksgiving, but as far as we've ever celebrated it, we would always go to the Officer's Club on base (my dad was in the Air Force and we never bothered to make food, so we just went on base to eat) and nosh on turkey and pie. We would always do a round of "I'm thankful for..." before we ate, but that was about it. It was mostly just an excuse to have an extravagent lunch and then nap all day.

That is so funny. My family used to do the same when I was little. I grew up in Germany and since we had a military base close by where my stepdad (who was retired military) worked, he used to take us there every year for Thanksgiving. It became our little family tradition, since the Germans don't actually celebrate this holiday. The best part for me was that they always gave out fresh fruits and nuts and little candies that were on display. Since those would have gotten thrown away at the end of the day we were free to take as many as we pleased.

I wouldn't go so far to say that Thanksgiving is all about food. For our family, it's more about family tradition -- that we've stuck together for so many years, through hardship, and are able to come together for the holiday. That's something to be thankful. It sounds like a platitude written down, but it really isn't.

Sadly, we don't visit soup kitchens and the like nearly as often as we should, though.
