Lamborghini is offering Murcielago LP640s for $3500/month. If you could spare the money, would you consider getting one?

Note that this is NOT a clear cut question. The $3500 payment is based on a 12 year amortization! The 5.9% loan over 12 years adds up to $143,000 in interest! Is getting a long term loan as a way to finance your dream car worth it if you'll likely not be able to afford it otherwise? Regular 60 month payment plans, even with 0% financing, are in the $5500-$7000 range. Keep in mind that this is a recession based deal and will likely not be offered when the economy improves.

I understand completely why you long for this baby. It is one sweet, hot automobile, but
I think I would have to pass on that deal. I just can't see paying on the car for 12 years, even a dream car. A lot can happen in 12 years, and you may not be as well off as you are now.

Assume you ARE still well off. Will this still be your dream car? I'm afraid I would get tired of it rather quickly (probably a year), and I might start looking with envy at other cars. I might even grow to resent my precious Lambo, and regret my decision to enter into such a long term commitment on her behalf. Before I even knew it was happening, I might find myself unfaithful to my dream car, riding around in a McLaren F1 or a Ferrari Enzo.

I think you can drive your dream car long enough to satisfy your longings and still leave yourself free for a new dream. For two grand per day, you can rent one of these babies and have a great weekend full of memories, without the long term commitment.

Buy a viper or something reasonable to drive around town, and just rent the exotics for special occasions. Think about it.

Asker's Rating:
• You're right, 12 years is a really long time. Also, there will be lots of other really great cars out by then too, as well as at least one or two superior choices from Lamborghini. Thanks for the great answer.

Not a chance. I like driving a nice car as much as the next person, but a car like this is not about transportation, it is about having a status symbol. I don't need a certain car in order to build up my image or esteem. In fact, driving around in a vehicle whose cost could feed a small country would damage my sense of self-worth.

Moreover, the monthly payments for the car are just the beginning. Cars with this kind of price tag are ridiculously expensive to maintain and insure. Whether the starting payment is $3500, $5000 or $7000, and even if I was a billionaire a million times over, something like this is not for me.
