Of course you don't. He can get free legal services if he is unemployed or underemployed. There are many resources on the web as well. Try for cooperation between the parties before going to a lawyer. If the Mom is cooperative there might be a great chance for no legal bills.

Great question! Many things are wrong with this situation. First of all reality! The states do make a father pay for child support even though the father never knew the child was created. Second, do you pay the bill as the girlfriend of a man in this situation? Your choice! Based on many factors. Third, what legal bill? Is he contesting the results? Why involve lawyers?
Pay the child support, don't pay the lawyers. Hopefully, your boyfriend can get to know his daughter. Money is money, people are people! The state will take payments and well the Mother is ... well, who she is...
The whole situation is wrong. Daughter not knowing father. Father not knowing daughter. Mother not telling father. Girlfriend paying for Mothers mistake. Boyfriend not making payment arrangements. State making father pay with no prior knowledge of child. The list seems endless. Great Conundrum!
Don't pay lawyers! Pay family...
The following video is a different situation, however, it shows that reunions (or unions) can be important after many years!

Why should you pay the legal bill when it is his daughter? He is a boy friend and not a husband. This daughter is between the mother and father not you.
I am just wondering why the mother is just now saying something after 17 long years, that was not nice in my opinion,
