On the day after Thanksgiving, we take our traditional trip to the same Christmas Tree Farm that we have been going to for twenty years. It is a small, organic (no pesticides) family operations with sustainable re-planting. Christmas trees are
one of their crops, just like their corn and grain crops that feed all the "green" proponents of building more non-recyclable metal trash trees that end up in dumps. Our trees go to create habitat for fish in lakes that lack natural structure. I even know the lake and where the trees are secured to the bottom. I dare say our live tree tradition is much "greener" than most self-righteous artificial tree owners who create a market for metal and plastic trash made in polluting factories and ending up in landfills.
We decorate our tree in the evening while listening to old classic Christmas music like Perry Como, Bing Crosby, and the Chipmunks. We drink hot chocolate and reminiscence about our favorite ornaments. The tree provides authentic Christmas aroma and tradition until the day we take it down, usually sometime between Christmas and New Year's day.
Our Christmas tree is real, just like our family and our traditions. We do not live in a sterile, isolated world where every one is pigeon-holed by the PC police.

I will have a fake one because we have cats and dogs and 1 child with an allergy to Christmas trees. So I try to find one that looks as real as possible and then decorate it with the same care and love that I would be applying to a real tree.

We have a fake one we put up every year simply because I cannot justify chopping down a tree just to have some indoor decor for a few weeks. I do love the smell of real trees, and have used real trees some years but I always look for ones in pots with the root system intact (naturally its usually a smaller tree, but still pretty). We got one of the ones in a pot when I was a small child, planted it in the backyard at the start of the new year and the tree flourished and grew beautifully and was over the roofline of the house by the time we moved out of the house when I was in high school. But primarily, I go for the fake ones. There are plenty of well constructed ones with beautiful detailing.

I would go for the fake tree.
Think of the environment. That real tree in your living room is really a dead tree. After a while it will start shedding and you will have to get rid of it. Think of all the pesticides and fertilizers that are used to keep that real tree going. (18 people can live on the amount of oxygen produced by one acre of Christmas trees).
At least the fake on can be re-used year after year. It's said that fake trees are usually re-used for 6-10 years. Also, there is no shedding or mess with a fake tree. For that real Christmas tree smell get some pine air freshener. You won't be able to tell the difference.

Fake, it is far more economical in the long run, and you know every year that your tree is going to be the perfect size and shape for your home. ^_^

There is no substitute for a real Christmas tree. The smell alone is so ingrained as part of Christmas, that holiday memories just wouldn't be the same without it.
I always use a real tree, except if I will be spending the holidays at another place, at my parents, or elsewhere, then being that will not be home, I usually just put up the artificial tree just to have some decor in the house prior to my departure. Otherwise, even when I had to spend Christmas alone in 2005 I put up a real tree.
Speaking for myself, every Christmas I have that magic moment, sitting next to the tree, having a cup of hot chocolate, when everyone is asleep, and I just stare into the tree listening to Christmas music, thinking about Christmas from long ago, loved ones that have left us, about joys to come. The look and smell of the real tree is part of that quilt of memories for me. I wouldn't give that up.

I would say fake. They don't make a mess. You don't have to untangle lights every year. It pays for itself in a year or two. Now they make artificial trees with LED lights!! Who would have thought?

Fake, fake, fake! I've never had a real tree in my life. Something about my mom having allergies....I don't know.
All I do know is that it's a tradition every day after Thanksgiving to pull out the Christmas tree box, and set it up while watching Christmas movies. Then we get to decorate and call it a day. No watering, few fallen needles. Badda bing. We're done.
Yep, there's something nice and dependable about my artificial tree. I've named it. It's always there for me and lasts for years and years and years. I love my Treenie!
