What do you do when someone texts you too much?

I don't want them to stop texting, I just wish it weren't continuously all day long, every day.

This happened to me before. A guy who was introduced to me kept texting me non-stop. Fed up, I finally stop responding to his text. Another guy miscalled and called me if I didn't answer his text right away. Turned out he only pursued me because he thought I was rich. What a bastard! If they are people I don't know well, I;ll just ignore them.

But for my family, friends, and students, I'll just tell them I'm busy and delay my response time. People usually don't text again until we text back. I have told my students firmly that I don't want to do counseling via text or chat and we can meet in person if they want to ask for counseling.

Text the reply: "Hey, I'm sort of busy today, but I'm going to call you after work! Looking forward to it."

If you stop responding, hopefully they will get the message and stop sending them.

Unless they know otherwise just tell them that you don't have an "unlimited texting plan" (anymore) so they can save you money by consolidating their messages or writing emails that you can respond to later.

Otherwise just tell them to pace themselves a bit, you have other people to talk to and work/school to tend to. If they like posting unimportant data all day, tell them to get a Twitter account and subscribe to it.

One message back from you saying that you're busy (or are taking a break) and will get back to them later is reason enough to not reply.

Now you need to work on skipping messages that can wait. Read them later. Just because someone texts or calls you doesn't mean you have to answer.

When was the last time you turned off your phone? Treat yourself to a few hours of alone time. Turn off your phone and relax!

Another solution is to get a Google Voice number and filter all your calls through that. You decide who gets through to your real phone (and when) and who gets saved for you to check later.

That's the problem with texts -- they're not really screenable. Well, first, I'd say just stop answering their texts. People tend to stop texting, most of the time, if they don't get a response. Texting out into oblivion isn't too fun.

On the chance that they don't get it, though, politely bring it up. Mention you're busy, sure, but if you have other ammunition, go for that. Limited texting plan? Bring it up. The sound/vibrating is bothering people? That too. Anything concrete.

Last resort, of course, is to turn off your phone -- but if you're in a work situation or something of that sort, it might not be that bad of an idea anyway!
