Conundrum Next Conundrum
What should you do if you suspect your family is getting you a large, expensive Christmas gift that you don't want at all?
Sadly, this is a real one. I really think my mother has gotten me a Kindle. She's mentioned that she's gotten me my "main gift" already, and she's been dropping hint after hint about them over the year. And I loathe Kindles. I like paper-and-ink books. The thought of books going digital scares the daylights out of me. But there's no way to bring this up without sounding incredibly rude -- or is there? And what if I'm wrong?

Sounds like you all just need to talk... and trust and not worry about hurting feelings... you will feel better if you just say, I think you are giving me a gift I do not want and it has been bothering me for a long time now. I love that you are giving me a gift, but if I do not like it I will feel sad that you went to the expense. So just to be blunt I do not like Kindles and I love paper and ink books...
Good luck!

Just say so. If need be, you can go 'tactful'by mentioning a Kindle specifically during a conversation about gifts others are giving this year - as in "Oh gosh, and guess what? My (coworker, friend, whatever) told me that she's getting her partner a KINDLE for Christmas - I'm sure he'll be thrilled, but I just had to laugh- I think those things are AWFUL!" Then segue back to 'Personally, I'm hoping to add to my 'REAL' reading collection !
Laugh heartily and politely as possible ignore any dramatic exchanges of glances, etc - they now have time - limited, but still! to exchange a Kindle if need be.
