Conundrum Next Conundrum
What will happen to the high school grad who wants to wait til he's 30 or so, then go to work? What can you say to him?
He's almost like a Renaissance man in his capabilities, yet he wants to really be a bum: unemployed, living on the street. It's heartbreaking.

I've employed a number of graduates over the years and my usual message to them is "Here is where your education begins".
I think that degrees are great, especially the ones where you have a years placement.
The thing is though, this is just the start. For me when you start your first job after your degree that is really where you learn all about the world of work and all it entails.
Many of the graduates i've taken on have said two years after they've started work "I've learned more in the last two years than I ever did at University".
So as for the 30 year old, well it's about time he enjoyed a working life.

There are a million ways to live your life and never has anyone lived a life that everyone else agrees with. It's all a matter of perspective. My brother has three kids and works from dawn until dusk. To him, he's providing well for his family. To me, and incidentally his three kids, he's neglective. They hardly know him. On the other side, he looks at me, who works full time, and my husband, who works every once in awhile, and thinks we are bums because we aren't both working two jobs each to make lots and lots of money since we have no kids. From our perspective, it's family, love, and leisure that is important to us, not money and possessions. So, he thinks he's closer to God because he works more and we think we are closer to God because we work less and are able to be there for each other. So, really, it's all a matter of perspective.
Let the kid do what he wants. If he wants to stay unemployed until he is 30 and can do so, more power to him, as long as he isn't idle with that time, wasting it on playing video games or sitting around doing nothing. School is merely a way to gain better employment, work is merely a way to get money, and money is merely a tool for survival. It's everything else in life besides school, work, and money that really matters and where a person's real education lies.

Is his actual plan really to live on the street?! If he has no ambition, how did he manage to graduate high school? If I were you, I would determine what he feels his problems are, then show him how to solve those problems with money. He feels he can get through life without it and this will only lead to regret. Ask him what he'll do when he's too old to work? How is he ever going to afford health insurance? Does he care about dating? How is he going to find someone who wants to be with him? It might be helpful to have a little more information from you about this particular situation, but to me it seems like he's just not thinking right now.
