When is it appropriate to talk to young athletes about reality?

It is obvious pretty early that some kids will never be professional athletes, but all the little league kids want to play in the majors. Little league only plays through 12 years old anyway, so just let them dream? On the other hand my son played on a HS travel team where a coach told them none of them would play college ball. Three are playing D1, 3 others are playing small college ball. How "realistic" do we want to be?

Reality will set in with the truly hopeless players soon enough; don't squash their dreams!

I don't think there's anything wrong with letting a kid have a dream, even if it's unrealistic. Encourage him to play his best and keep dreaming, in spite of what a thoughtless coach says. Children need to learn that others' opinions of them aren't always justified. How on earth could that coach possibly know what the future holds for those kids? As they get older and stronger and have more playing experience, they may become excellent competitors.

Drive and ambition can account for as much success as natural talent. When a child who loves sports just doesn't have what it takes to be a professional sports player, they can still have lucrative careers as sports writers, commentators, officials, and other sports-related occupations.

I just tell my kids to play hard and do their best. I want them to enjoy their sports while they can play them. I think it is fine for them to set goals to get better and to dream of pro sports. By high school the kids will have an idea of how good they are by the attention or lack thereof from college scouts.
