Speaking for myself, if I was formally and properly requested to look after another person's items, I would endeavor to do so with the same care that I would apply to my own. I feel if one accepted such a responsibility, that is the decent thing to do.
If however, the person did not even give you a chance to reply and just assumed you would watch over them, or failed to stipulate an estimated time frame that their items need caring for, then I would not abandon them to the wind either, but if I were occupied with another pertinent issue, I will not feel responsible if something happened to the items in those instances. Likewise, if I had another engagement and the person had yet to return, I would be forced to leave the items under the charge of the most responsible person available, even if that person were not my first choice.
Basically, if you explicitly accepted the responsibility, you are responsible for the specified duration. If it was just thrown on you; well, you can't be expected to provide full supervision under those circumstances.

Let's look to Science for the answer!
Value of item "A"
1) A drink
2) A sandwich & Drink
3) A bag of some shopping items
4) Backpack
5) Purse/Wallet/Laptop
Location "B"
1) In my house/in a cab or enclosed area
2) At my friend's house
3) At a party at my friend's house
4) In a quiet shop or coffee house
5) In a busy shop or coffee house
A + B = Effort on a 2-10 scale with 2 barely checking in on it 10 being I hold onto it personally until my friend returns.

Cheap your answer was good, but not complete. LOL I give all of A+B a complete 10, and always hold the item, or place it right in front of me to keep my eye on it. Mostly because, you cannot value someone's possessions be it food or inanimate objects with your own point system. Only they can value it, and feel it's true worth to themselves. A picture of my mom would mean the world to me, as she is now passed away. To you or anyone else, it's just a picture of a nice looking lady, probably worth about 20 cents, and if your drink spilled on it, you wouldn't be that upset by it. To me however, my mom will never be around to take another picture, and I didn't get around to scanning that one into a digital backup, and am very upset it was ruined by your hurricane. heehee couldn't resist the pun.
