I was most afraid of being alone all the time. I moved out into an apartment--I didn't go to school right away--and the hardest thing to get used to was not having that immediate support net of my family. The first few months away were the hardest. I lived in a studio apartment and all of my neighbors were unfriendly or not the kind of people I wanted to associate with (like the much older alcoholic woman across the hall).
I had never been very social before so this was a surprise for me. I always expected I would be just fine on my own. But not hearing the footsteps or voices of another person in my home was difficult. Eventually, I found a coffee house and made a bunch of friends so I had company, so things turned out just fine. Those first few months, though...wow.
