From time to time I wanted to be a missionary, a scientist or a writer. I started to write a book while I was five years old with the help of my 2nd grade brother who knew how to spell a lot more words than I did. I had just finished reading Black Beauty and Bambi (yes, at five), and was inspired to write a book about animals. My short lived career came to a screeching halt the day my brother became angry and tore up the book. I had told him that he was an awful "Captain Hook" in the school play. He was never in another play, and I didn't write again until High School when I started writing really sentimental poetry for song lyrics that certain girls found "dreamy".
What I most often wanted to do was to have several hundred thousand acres of forest land and make a natural preserve. Looking back, I think I was impacted quite strongly by an early love for nature and animals.
I eventually became a librarian, and now I am trying once again to become a writer.

• I don't know why. I adored this story. So real how even small events when we are children have such a great impact.
I aspired to be a writer too, I have a homemade book from elementary that says on the cover my name, author and inside "I want to be a writer when I grow up."
Thanks for the answer and good luck!

I wanted to be a pilot! Whenever I look up and see an airplane, I can visualize myself flying one someday. It's a bit odd since I'm a female but since I was a little kid, that's what want to be...
Years later, I'm still not a pilot. But I'm not giving up that dream yet. I'm just 21 and there are still lots of possibilities in life. I enjoy my work right now, but there's a part of me who still dream of flying an airplane someday. That kid from years ago still exists inside me. ^^

Just like today, I couldn't make up my mind. I once drew a picture of me being all the things I wanted to be when I grew up, and it involved me wearing an explorer outfit (à la 1920s African explorer) with a tutu (I took ballet classes for awhile), driving a bus (my big dream to be a bus driver!) and holding binoculars (homage to my "Harriet the Spy" phase) and a Lego (representing working at a Lego factory, go figure). I also (in real life) used to wear fake half-moon glasses and grade my bear's homework, and for awhile I'm pretty sure I wanted to be a lion ("The Lion King" was truly one of the more inspirational Disney movies).
Today, I'm working for a trucking company, helping schedule moves from one part of the country to the other. My dreams in college were to either be an Italian translator, or get a Master's in linguistics - nowhere near where I am right now. But I'm so very grateful to be entering into the working world, and for having the job I do. Perhaps in the future I can get back into languages and linguistics.
Now that I've completely abused parentheses, I hope that answers your question. :)

When I was a child I wanted to be a nurse. But when I was in high school nursing course are very expensive so I decided to pursue another medical field the BS in Physical Therapy. I finished this course and I am happy that even though I did not pursue nursing I can still be around sick people. I wanted to help in any way I can. It makes me feel good to talk to them especially their experiences when I am around people in all walks of life and in any ages from children to elderly. I find their stories so fascinating.
Now, presently I am not working in the hospital but I teach skills to our Caregiving students in school. In a way I am still grateful that I am able to impart my knowledge and skills to them. Seeing them finish their course is a good enough accomplishment to me.

I wanted to be an elementary teacher from the time I was 6 years old. Even then as a little kid myself I wanted to be around little kids and teach them some of what they will need to know to get through life. Fast forward ten years, I got pregnant with my first child and my husband and I got married. I quit high school and got my GED while I was pregnant with my daughter. When she was less than a year old I decided I wanted to make my dream of becoming an elementary teacher a reality so I enrolled in community college. I quit only a month and a half later before receiving a credits because my husband wasn't making very much money and with living expenses and babysitting fees we had pretty much no money left over for anything. I started to feel guilty for not contributing any money, but having to budget out like $120 every two weeks to pay our babysitter. Another reason why I decided it would be best to quit college was because I realized that I hated Science and Social Studies when I was in school and I wasn't really smart in either of those subjects so I figured it probably would not be a good idea to teach a small child a subject that I hate and would never want to learn myself. I have been working at a State facility working with mentally challenged individuals for almost 5 years now. I now hate my job because of all the politics, but I'm financially stuck so I can't quit and find a different job that I would like more. So no, I'm not in the job I always dreamed I would be in, but I hope that one day I will have the time and money to go back to college studying for a degree in a profession that I think I will enjoy and excel at.

I must have been an odd child, in that I wanted to be a kid when I grew up.
I would see myself in an adult form, but enjoying the life that seemed ideal to me as a child. Being able to buy any toy I wanted, eat whatever and whenever I wanted, no bed time, see any TV show I wanted.
I suppose it may have been a combination of being naive and innocent. I never really focused on what I wanted to be until mid way through my teen years, then ambition took over and that helped me reach my professional goals.
Even so, I still remember how I saw myself being as an adult when I was a child, and occasionally I will sit down watch a favorite childhood cartoon while eating ice cream out of the bin it came in and get a special delight out of it.
