The home worker may not have chosen to be in the role they are in but whether they are a social person or one who is content with being alone, there are always choices in the work place. Many online employers understand the value of interaction and the need to socialize while at work and have created a way for the employees to interact with their peers while doing their job.
The forums and chat rooms developed by companies grow every day with people who work from home. This media "water cooler" allows employees to discuss issues they may be disgruntled with or problems they are facing with an assignment. The forums also allow small talk and chit-chat amongst employees. The employee is only as lonely as he or she chooses to be in this instance.
Although the interaction is not face to face, many good friends have been made on line through the forums and social networking sites. Most of these sites have groups which can be formed to gather those like minded people together to unite for what ever reason and some even schedule coffee clutches and meetings for those who live near each other.
Working online is not so much a lonely job as it is an experience to meet new people and gain their knowledge and experience. I have met many great people who have gone above and beyond to help with some of the problems I have had to face working online. I have also been able to get a swift kick in the butt when I needed it in order to accomplish a task I just did not feel capable of doing.

I think that it depends on the person.
For exaple:
The worker, Some people (myself included) would rather work in a quiet environment on their own. People like this are more productive working alone or in tiny groups. I tend to place a great deal of value on time alone. If my time at work is time alone, I may crave more time with my friends and family. (Impact positive.)
Some people like lots of coaching and people to bounce ideas off of, these people may be negitvely impacted if forced to work online. A person may get lonely and crave more time with friends and family but if they have no friends and family to spend time with the online job may even increase feelings of lonelyness (Impact negative)

Yes, I think this is accurate.
It depends on the person, the work, and what the rest of their life is like.
The kind of jobs which can successfully be done online (writing, programming etc) are jobs in which people might spend a lot of time alone with a computer even if they were working in an office surrounded by colleagues.
If you're part of an organisation, but mostly working remotely, there could also be a downside in terms of missing out on all the informal relationships which can be very important to getting things done and for progressing in your career.
