Unfortunately, not. My concern would be (maybe this is crazy) that when I pulled over, I would find that there was suddenly a man with her, and she had been standing there as "bait." I also know that women are just as capable of physical violence as men, and just as likely to be armed or mentally ill.
Now, if she was obviously stranded, I would stop and ask her (through my cracked window!) if she wanted me to call her a tow truck. I would not let her in, stop my engine, etc., but I would make sure that if she needed help, I sent someone.
I would probably give her a ride if she was elderly, however. There is still some risk, but I would feel much more confident stopping for an old woman, and maybe it would just be worth the risk.

No, I would not. Gender, size, race, or any other physical traits are not reason to feel safe in the confines of your car, with a stranger. While it may sound heartless, I would not risk my physical safety, to pick up someone, who should not be hitch hiking in the first place. For all she knows, I might be a sociopath. It is unsafe now days for anyone to hitch hike.

Possibly. It completely depends on the context (where am I going, where are they hitch hiking to and from, age of the person, etc.). I really don't think it is more dangerous now to pick up hitchhikers than it was in the past. It's always been a risk to let a stranger into your vehicle. So, while I never have picked up a hitch hiker, I am not completely opposed to the idea. Maybe I am too naive about human nature, but I really don't think so. I think people are majorly paranoid.

Highly unlikely. There are too many risks, regardless of gender.
There are many great ways to help people in this world, and there are definitely a few things for which I am willing to risk my life, but giving a stranger a ride in my car is not one of them. My first priority has to be the family that depends on me, and I feel that it is my obligation to be as safe as I can for them in most circumstances.

As the article indicates, a hitchhiker could appear to be perfectly nice and "harmless", but you just never know. We've probably all seen scary stories like this over the years, and it's not worth it.
However, there might be some situations in which I'd give a person enough money to take a cab or a bus somewhere, depending on my instincts and other factors at the time.
