My first thought here actually came from a psychology 101 class I took in college... according to Maslow's Hierarchy of needs those that feel compelled to obey the law despite their own personal feelings in regards to it fall into tier 2:Safety

A normal healthy, intelligent and productive human being should be well.. up there towards the top. Basically psychologically speaking a person who would follow a nonsense law to avoid punishment.. isn't well adjusted.
Personally while I wouldn't base my decision on that information, I just found it interesting... I also find myself at the top baby.. the law can kiss my brain because that's who I follow.

I think lots of people actually break laws that they consider to be nonsense. The deciding factor tends to be the actual chance of punishment. Where I live, the government is always cooking up new, strange and sometimes restrictive laws. However, the ability to police a lot of them is somewhere close to zero. Some people understand that and other people don't. You can definitely see which groups of people in our population "get it" and go about their lives with their behavior unchanged, especially in comparison to other groups who've never seen things that way.
