Nope, terrified of heights. I'd likely give them away to some one who had always wanted to learn to fly.

Actually, I DID get a flying lesson as a birthday present, a number of years ago. It was a co-flight in a glider, and was quite a happening. It is amazing how quiet it is while flying a glider, as it has no propellor, and literally glides on the wind.
I really considered taking lessons after that, but the price of a complete course, and the requirement to have to fly a number of hours per year to keep the license put me off in the end.
It was a very nice birthday gift though, one that I still remember, and was given by a very dear friend, who had no death-wishes for me. :)

(It wasn't as pretty a plane as the picture below though)

Gliding was one of the big sports out near where I grew up ( flat, hot and calm ) - being in a glider is AMAZINGLY quiet, its eerie and wonderful and a bit scary too. If I had the money I would have taken it up myself too :)

Yes.

Although, in my case, the birthday present was my first sky-dive.

Personally no. I would take the first lesson and that is it, or possibly politely decline the gift. I simply do not have the time, money, or desire to go further then that.

These lessons can be quite expensive and I would make absolutely sure that the person I am giving it to would enjoy the idea, and would have the time, money, and desire to continue to take lessons.

So the bottom line, I think depending on the person this may be a fantastic gift, however it is a poor suprise gift.

I'm almost the same as you... flying lessons are expensive, as is flying as a hobby after you've qualified. "No can do" at present.

But where I differ is that I love the idea of flying, and I'd be happy to have a one-off lesson for the experience of it, even if I wasn't going to take it any further. An hour or half-hour of piloting a plane in a lifetime is better than none! :D

I'd definately take the first lesson... and I'm sure it would be an amazing day out.

But would i carry on? probably not. Flying is going to take a large commitment both of time and money. And I don't think that I'm likely to have enough of either at the moment to justify it.

But if someone gave me the gift as a one of, that would be great.

I think I would. My mother, my father, my step father all have taken flying lessons, and my mother and step father both own planes and fly regularly.

I'd partake of the gift of course. To ignore the birthday present would be rude, but the cost of them would keep me on the ground..
