To be honest i will definitely say it in such a way so the person won't feel disappointed.
To make help is better
To offer more by supporting and encouraging is main in having friends
The diplomacy is very helpful.

Anyway ,in some cases, you really can say, the real truth about something or somebody in order to provoke the change.

I do prefer the first part when basically helping and offering can boost up the energy of one or many...
its very effective and it counts in therms of friendship for a long period of time.
Anytime you'll go back in time ,remembering the reactions of others to your mistakes ,will give you a good understanding of :
- how important is to trust, believe ,protect and support others

I would tell her/him to practice more on where he lacks. I would suggest him/her to listen to my favorite singers how they sing. A little white lie can make her/him feel good, lol. And depending how close we are, I would base my degree of compliment to it.
