The parents most likely knew that you'd bring your new guy, and that's why they wanted the ex's presence to be a "surprise". They are interfering, plain and simple with their passive-aggressive move. When you get there and find your ex there, you should immediately leave, and let your parents deal with the ex and his leftover feelings.

That would stink if my parents did that. Personally I would walk away from the family dinner, because inviting an old flame is in bad taste. Then that evening I would call my parents and tell them how I felt, and why I left.
