It depends on what the warranty actually covers (and yes I'm one of those strange people that does read the small print). If it has a specific clause against dropping it then I probably wouldn't take it any further If I knew that it had been dropped. However I would expect it to survive normal wear and tear that it may face in a normal laptop ag.
My favourite story is this one http://consumerist.com/5360174/epic-kindle-2-fails-mans-drop-test-forces-amazon-to-pay-him-400
The guy dropped his Kindle and it broke. Amazon wanted to charge him $200 for a replacement. He sent them a letter saying that although it wasn't under warranty for falls, it was reasonable to expect it to survive a small drop and that he would settle with Amazon out of court if they replaced the Kindle (for $200) and gave him $200 compensation.
Amazon paid up and sent him a check for $400... which he used to buy another kindle with.

I sat right next to an out of warranty resolution phone bank at a major manufacturing company for several years, and you'd be amazed at what they gave people sometimes. Even if you don't get a new laptop, you might get a hugh discount off that super model that you really wanted in the first place. Big companies have budgets for unhappy customers and their job is to turn you into a happy and "brand loyal" customer (ugh).
I wouldn't lie, but I would call up and ask what they could do for me.
