Conundrum Next Conundrum

You have a small home day care and ask each of the seven children to jot down a number between 0-100 on a sheet. After the children leave...

... you take these numbers and enter them into the state lottery. You had the right intuition and win the jackpot containing $23 million. Will you share this money with the children (and their families) who gave you these numbers in the first place?

There is no ethical requirement to share the winnings with them. They did not participate in the risk of loss by paying for part of the ticket(s) cost, so they do not have any ethical or legal claim to any of the winnings. Having said that, it would be a nice gesture to treat them to a trip to an amusement park, or contribute toward their college funds. If you do decide to do this, however, consult with an attorney to make sure you do this in a way that does not establish any further obligation on your part toward the children or their families.

Just as in most facets of our lives, just because there is not legal responsibility, doesn't mean there isn't an ethics factor. If you initiated this activity with these children, for the purpose of using that information in this manner, I would say that the right thing to do, would be to offer some of your winnings to their families. I agree with the above statement that contributing funds to their college educations would be a great way to invest your winnings. You're investing in their futures. Generosity truly does offer the most sincere reward.
The real question is whether or not you would continue to care for these children should you not have the need for the income? I would honestly question your character if you chose to keep the entire winnings, then leave these children by the way side.
