I'd ask them if maybe they had a virus or some kind of malware on their machine that was using their mailbox to send me spam. I'd also ask if their email could have been hacked. If they replied that they had, in fact, sent the spam, I'd ask them not to send anymore. If it continued, I'd just dump them. No one wants a friend with no morals.

You don't explain what, to you, is "obviously spam" regardless tell them as soon as possible. Spam is the scourge of the internet.
I think a bit overestimated but heres a site that reckons spam accounts for 90% of all email

It is also estimated spam cost $130 BILLION per year, thats $42 billion just in the US alone, which works out to $11.67 per month for every person!!

I could not think of a reason why you would NOT tell them, either they are doing it intentionally (even if with innocent reasons) then ask them to stop and point out to them the damage and cost to the internet, or maybe they are infected with a virus that is spreading spam to all in their address book, in which case they need informing as soon as possible to remove the infection and stop the spread.
You would not find acceptable 'spam' phone calls from a friend (or stranger) why should you regard your email as any different?

I would rather report or mark them as spam and just ignore them. They will stop soon. The more you respond to such mails, the more interested the persons behind them becomes and sends more and more spams. Just ignore. Thanks
