IF I didn't have a few 'gifts' put away - I usually have a few spare things wrapped up to give if a neighbor comes over and they bring me an unexpected gift but say in this case I didn't have anything at all I could wrap or regift in a short amount of time...
I look her straight in the face and apologize and say "I'm sorry I completely forgot about a gift for such and such, I'm so very sorry". That's it, there is nothing else to do.
