Do swine flu "fakers" deserve a special punishment?
MSNBC is reporting that Swine Flu "fakers" are taking advantage of the flu to get a few days off work. This just seems so wrong, should workplaces create a special punnishment for anyone busted trying this? What should it be? Maybe something creative and nasty.

Any type of “faker” with the primary intent to skip work should receive some kind of penalty, regardless whether they are faking the swine flu, the common cold or another illness. The main idea remains the same: The person is not taking his job seriously enough to follow through with his daily work and is lying to get out of doing the duties he agreed to when he accepted the position. Fact is there is always another individual out there who would truly appreciate that person’s job and chances are the “faker” will not have the job much longer if his employer becomes aware of his tactics. However, I can see why you may ponder a “special punishment” for somebody faking the swine flu to get out of work. Obviously, this person would have to call in to the employer and notify him about their supposed condition, at which point the employer would likely have to take precautions of his own and inform the rest of his staff. The fellow employees would then likely panic if they believed they were exposed to swine flu, especially if they had recently been in close contact with the “faker”. They may experience some emotional distress that prevents them from concentrating fully on their work and if they have children, they would probably feel even more scared. Further, if other “fakers” are present within the company, this incidence now gives them the opportunity to say they too caught the swine flu and stay home.

It is wrong to fakee swine flu just because you want some days or weeks off
especially in times like this when lots of people are crying of being layed off
I think they should be punished only if the excuse wasjust because they needed to lazy around at home and nothing serious.

Should they have "special punishments"? No.
There isn't really any difference between someone cheating their colleagues and employers by claiming 'swine flu' and them claiming to have food poisoning, regular flu or a broken ankle.

Why would they deserve a special punishment? It isn't as if they're faking the Black Plague. People fake sick all the time; this just happens to be a time where people are being given a bit more leeway than usual.
And if there was to be a special punishment, you'd get into the whole gray area of taking the time to prove they don't have H1N1, and accounting for any possible confusion between it and some other form of the flu. I know plenty of people who genuinely thought they had swine flu and presented all the symptoms CDC mentions but in fact had something less benign. It's a big mess and not worth the time.

It is up to company policy. Companies can request an employee to get a nasal swab to 'prove' they have the swine flu. Just like some places say that you need a doctor's note if you call in sick for more than 3 days.
All hospital emergency rooms are swabbing noses and some doctor's offices will send out the swab for the test. Every patient that came into our hospital this past week got a nasal swab whether they were having symptoms or not.
As for any special punishment, it is still up to the company. Most places of employment do not require you to give a reason why you are calling off because of the HIPAA laws. If they do, they may be in violation of this law. So employees do not need to lie about why they are calling in sick, they just need to say that they won't be at work to get a few days off.

No, people have always faked illness at different points to take a few days off. There should be no special punishment, but most companies are enforcing the rules of going to be seen by an MD if you have or think you have the flu to get clearance to come back to work. So, if someone wants to waste their money, then that's all on them.

Special punishment for those who fake swine flu? Loss of pay should be enough punishment. If an individual wants to fake being sick, they are going to do it whether it's swine flu or a gastrointestinal disorder. If someone misses a lot of work, they should be forced to produce a doctor's excuse but for a couple days here and there, it's going to be tough to prove and even more difficult to control.
If someone is stating they have swine flu to get some sort of financial gain like sympathy money, gifts, help with chores or food etc, that should be prosecuted as fraud.
