I think its pretty darn safe considering how much better my back and joints feel since I started wearing nothing but Vivo Barefoot shoes about 6 months ago. Our feet didn't evolve so that we can stick a couple inches of rubber under them and loose all tactile senses in them.

Some evidence suggests that people who run with shoes may be more prone to chronic injuries and acute ankle sprains than people who run barefoot

It is not a safe alternative to shoes. Running puts the joints through a lot of impact stress. Some of the stress is absorbed with the shoe. Additionally, he surface on which you are running will have a negative impact on your feet if it is a rough surface.

Remember that sneakers were only invented and used in the second half of the last century.
Humans were successful because we came down from the trees and travelled on foot.
We have been running on bare feet longer than shoed feet.

My husband is a runner, and he would never run on a city street or sidewalk barefoot - ever. It's just too dangerous.
However, on a padded track, he says running barefoot when the temperature is warm, really stretches the foot and feels good too.
I wouldn't recommend anyone running barefoot on a city street. Too much chance of getting glass or something in the foot, and if you're running right, with endorphins going and blood pumping, a cut from a piece of glass could be very bad and you might not notice it right away.

I don't think it's not safe, but I'm sure those runners take precautions before running. I'm sure they don't run anywhere, they probably run on sidewalks or paved streets. I don't think it's unsafe as long as their are running places that are not harmful to the well being of their feet.
