no, absolutely not. I would tell them to avoid those places like the plague. The best example is Clare Oliver.

This is a must-read interview with Clare Oliver, a young skin cancer victim who attributed her early death to tanning salons

Read about her campaign against salons and about her death here:

Clare Oliver blamed repeated trips to a tanning salon when she was young as the cause of her cancer!

See the Clare Oliver website here:

And it is now illegal in the UK for under 18s to go to these tanning salons - too much evidence they are harmful

No, I wouldn't. If my son or daughter wants to go to a tanning salon, they're 18 and they can pay for it themselves. I don't support tanning salons -- there are way too many health risks and no tangible benefits. On an aesthetic level, I just don't like the way salon tans or fake tans look (although since my skin is naturally tan, I might not be the best one to talk.) They always come out orange.

There are plenty of birthday gifts I can get that I wouldn't have any problem spending money on. And I hate to say "he/she'll appreciate it in time," but well, I actually believe it in this case.

No I wouldn't. Anymore than I'd buy him a huge box of Cuban cigars, or a case of beer.

All of the above could (in some circumstances) be a suitable gift for certain people, but they do carry with them a significant health risk that could easy be exacerbated by someone who doesn't use them properly.

The fact that this is 'the only thing he wants' seems to show that he wouldn't be mature enough to use it with caution. So that would make me even less likely to get it for her/him.
