Conundrum Next Conundrum
You notice that your friend is clearly depressed: She has let herself go, avoids all contact with others by barely leaving the house, ...
... she has gained weight and no longer cares about her looks, and you constantly catch her crying for the smallest things. You have offered your help and even suggested finding professional help for her when she voiced regrets about having to be alive. However, she keeps declining any help and prefers to remain in her misery. What should/can you do in this case?

Buy her a few inspirational books, offhand: The Power of Positive Thinking; The Power of Your Subconscious Mind; The Tao Te Ching by Lao Tsu; basic works of Carl Jung; The Hero's Journey; books on Mind Science or Christian Science; the topic of Cognitive Psychology; books on nutraceuticals and herbs for depression; books on Orthomolecular Psychology.
Having these around will offer one or more keys that have worked for many people, and people not going out have time to read. The mind wants to heal and can find a path to that state.

It may not be depression, but some other psychotic or schizoid condition. Only a doctor would be able to determine exactly. Sometimes people can get a combination of conditions at the same time. If she gets any worse and you worry that she will hurt herself, you may want to go to the local hospital's psychiatric department and start the procedure to get her sectioned so that she can be forced into the hospital for treatment.

Absolutely don't buy her books, that will only antagonize her further(I would know, I used to be depressed.). You are doing all you can, which is to show her that you care about her and value her life and try to get her help. Just telling her that you love her can go a long way.
It may be natural to become frustrated with her for not "snapping out of it", but she can't be expected to.
