Conundrum Next Conundrum

Should I root for my favorite professional football team to go 0-16 and get the #1 draft pick next year or root for them to win as many game

I live in Tampa, FL and we went 0-26 many, many years ago. Then we won a Super Bowl and now we're back to sucking again. We play New England this week and the prospects of wining a game are bleak. But I don't want to become a late night punch line.

I was a Junior in High School when your Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished their first season in the league at 0-14. I remember seeing a video montage of their season, set to the music of "We've only just begun" showing each loss, and the players, fans and coaches disappointment as they had hoped for so much more. They lost back to back home games in October against Seattle and Miami, by just three points each.

The next year they finished 2-12. They won 5 games their fourth year and took home their first NFC Central Division championship in 1979. The improvement was not due to good drafting however, it was due to improved performance by Doug Williams and Ricky Bell on offense, and in large part due to Lee Roy Selman leading the defense to the number one spot.

It wasn't until last year that my beloved Lions surpassed Tampa as the Losing-est team in NFL History by achieving a flawless 0-16 season. The draft "advantage" that this earned them has led to more futility, and even though Kevin Smith seems unaware that the lion's stink, trust me, the fans know.

So based on the history of some reall ylousy team, I would say that either improvement of the players already on the roster or trades for more capable players are both better strategies for improvement, better at least than losing every game and hoping for a good draft.

Cheer for the Bucks to win. (They are losing to NE right now, sorry)
