When was the last time you printed a photograph?

Having had digital cameras/phones for a while now I've got out of the habit of actually having paper copies of photos...

when was the last time you actually printed one? What was it? are we missing out by only looking at them on monitors?

Funny you should ask! At this very moment, I am moving a bunch of pictures from my phone to my hard drive, because I want to print some out and I want to e-mail others to friends. And, I was thinking the same thing - the pix I'm printing are for a court hearing (can you believe I actually got a parking meter to SMILE? ;-) - that we never print them out unless it is for some very specific reason.

We DO take out albums of when the kids were little and review them from time to time, so yeah, we're kinda missing out on that. But, then again, we also have tons of packs of pictures sitting in various drawers - and I don't mind not adding to that!

But, I think I do need to print a bunch of these out - to get back to that happy medium spot! Thanks for the nudge, andy!

• This question was inspired by the fact that I had to print out some photos of my daughter for an elderly relative... and I had a couple left which are now on my desk at work. Seeing them there reminded me of how much we miss out on not having real photographs sometimes....so I'm going to print some more

I very much enjoy looking at an "album" of perhaps 75 or more digital pictures taken of my son, daughter-in-law, and especially my only grandchildren, who all live in another state.

But I also love to have a special picture or two to show my friends how fast my grandchildren are growing up, for instance.

I picked the best picture from my grand-daughter's birthday and printed it out.

You cannot carry with you the monitor on which you have looked at your pictures!! So printing out is still a necessity in that situation!!

For the most part I look at photos my wife and I have taken on the PC. The fantastic shots (roughly 1/1000)are made into high quality prints to sell or to distribute to my family. The last one we created prints of was a shot from the Spring if I am not mistaken.

I make print back ups of almost all my digital photos as I don't trust technology to last forever and I want my photographic memories to last.

I purchased a printer for printing pictures to cut cost, and I have boxes and albums full of photos. The last time I printed was after my sons recent first birthday. I wouldn't say we are missing out viewing them on monitors but we are risking losing them forever.

My favorite pic from that bunch.. his first discovery of his new blow up axes. I loved that it appeared he was leaning on it, and that he was only wearing one sock at the time lol He's a stripper.

It is much easier and more environmentally friendly to use a digital camera and store the images. But I do occasionally print out special shots to hang, frame or send to someone so they can display them or carry them around.

There is something different about looking at hands on photos in person, the same way there is in reading a book in hand versus one online or via services like Kindle.

Beautiful photographs are an art form and art is often best in person, particularly photographs done by gifted and talented photographers.

One really nice thing about digital shots loaded into the computer is the fun you can have altering them or cropping them, changing the backgrounds and so forth. Plus it is cheaper to have it digital so you can choose the precise prints you want in actual copies instead of paying for al of them to be printed.

It is also a lot cheaper and easier to share them with a larger audience when they are digitally rendered and you can put them online on photo sharing services or send them via email.

I haven't printed a picture in a couple of years. Having the ability to store them on my hard drive as well as online makes printing them really unnecessary. Plus I don't have room to store multitudes of photo albums. In fact, one of my long-term goals is to scan all of my current printed photos so I can get rid of the hard copies and free up space in my closet. I do like being able to look at my photos, but since they are all online, this is rarely an issue. I am close to a computer monitor just as often (if not more so), than I am close to one of my photo albums.

I haven't printed a photo in years, and only really do it when I buy those disposable cameras at the last minute. And even that I haven't done for a while.

I just don't see a need to at this point in my life. I don't really keep photo albums, I've already filled up the two picture frames I have in my room, and I'm not out looking for more. The computer more than suffices to store pictures for now, although I do back them up and take those kinds of precautions.

It's been 3 months. About every 6 months or so a family member requests a print of my daughter to see how she's growing up. These older family members don't have email so I print a big batch, tuck a few in some greeting cards and mail them out. That's it.

And I'm okay with that. There's something about the screen that still makes it very alive, very convenient, and not as fragile.
