Conundrum Next Conundrum
I love my neighborhood and my apartment, but it's a horrible commute to my office. Think I should move?
It is worth the trouble to shave an hour or so (total) off my daily drive, but live in a part of town that's less fun and walkable? Really having a hard time deciding what would most increase my overall happiness and quality of life.

some people like that daily drive... gives them time to think or listen to music they like or an audio book...
so i guess it depends on whether you like to drive... and how much you like living where you are...
what do you like more and what are you willing to give up to get it...
life is all about choices and we have to give to get what we want.

This is actually a very good point ... when I worked in New Hampshire, I loved my drive to Hollis ... but only in the summer, only when it wasn't raining :) But then, for the ~2 months cumulative where there was nice weather, it was pretty cool to have a drive.

Happiness is life is NOT having a commute. Period.
In New York City I was 12 blocks from my office and would walk to and from it daily with my faithful dog Toro.
In Los Angeles I'm in Brentwood and four short miles of scenic drive to my office. I'd prefer to be able to walk, and we've even talked about getting closer. Right now my commute is six to 15 minutes on average--it's wonderful.
Commuting is just horrible.... an hour in the car 20 days a month is 240 hours in the car a year!!! think about that man.... you're killing yourself for nothing. What would 200 hours of your live be worth!?!?!?! How about after 10 years and 2,000 hours!??!?!
Just do it. Better to live in a smaller place and spend that time exercising.

To me, environment is everything.
Since you stated that your neighborhood is not the greatest, plus adding the time lost in commuting... I see it as a win win to find a better and closer place to live.
Those hours do add up when using the calculator!
The only down side to this is a temporary pain in the butt from the actual move... and the temporary pain in your pocketbook.
4 out of 5 voices in my head say "Go for it!"

I say quit your job.
Gainful employment is for suckers.
In all seriousness, jobs come and go. At the very least, offices move.
Buy a house in an area that you love and drive if required. Building equity in a house is a great way to start becoming financially independent and the way that the market looks now, you stand to make a good amount of money on a house if you live there for a long time.
