According to Linenplace.com in a quality product there is very little incremental increase in comfort level above a thread count of 300. Thread count has become a number used primarily for marketing purposes and techniques have been developed to increase the thread count without increasing comfort level. These include, weaving with 2 ply yarns and using multiple threads in the weft. Fibre quality, yarn size and finishing also have a significant effect on how the finished sheet will feel and need to be taken into account in addition to thread count.

Anything above 300, I let my hands be the judge. I have felt 500 thread count that was scratchy and 300 that was perfect.
You might also want to be aware also that the term 'egyptian cotton' is used for the same marketing purposes and I have felt some that were as rough and old feeling as Ramses himself!
