A co-worker invades my personal space, what should I do?

Whenever we talk he always stands one foot in front of me. I prefer (as do most Americans) for people to stand about arms length away when talking. I don't want to be rude. How should I handle this situation?

In many cultures, it is actually rude to stand further away. Is he from another country? If so, he may be just slow to acclimate. Either way, if this is his usual behavior, it is probably reasonable to assume he does with everyone. That makes it a great issue to bring up with H.R., because it would be very hard for him to figure out who brought it up. A human resources manager should be able to gently explain to him what "professional" distance is, and ask him to abide by it.
