I have lived 10 years in a different state from my daughter. I make yearly flights to see her around Christmas time, but this year I am unable to afford the trip due to illnesses that have drained my finances. This is only one of a few Christmases that have been missed and this year was so hard because she is having a baby girl at 8 am in the morning and I am not there for that either.

Yes it is hard. But I have a life here and she has a life there and we will make a trip when we can and continue to speak on the phone as much as possible.

In today's world, many people are separated from family at Christmas. I have two sons who live on opposite ends of the country, and the closest is 1,000 miles from me. This will be the first time in 4 years we have all been together at Christmas.

Actually, since I'm not a Christian, I don't care much about the holiday. It just works out that one son has Christmas break from school, so it's the only time he can come.

I haven't been separated by my family for over 26 years, and never thought I would be. However, I will be apart from them this year. What's to blame, you ask? It's simple really ... Marriage! Gotta make time for the in-laws :-)
