How can you tell if a wink is meant to be flirtatious or just an innocent, friendly gesture?

Are some people serial winkers, which invalidates the meaning behind their winks?

I don't think a wink means what it used to.
Today there are many body language tools that people use in conjunction to just winking or raising the eyebrows.

I would look at a wink as a more playful gesture today, and most serial winkers I've seen will also call me 'hun' or 'babe'. I think it may turn into a twitch if overused.

Depends on, who is winking!

If you know, that the person is pure at heart, his/her winking is an innocent, friendly gesture.

I think the only somewhat reliable way to tell is based on age. If you're younger and they are decades older than you, it's a safe bet to assume it was innocent. However, I've noticed that people with only friendly intentions almost never wink at people their own age. Of course, it's always much easier to tell if the wink is surrounded by conversation; then you have more to go on.

Well, if if a flirt is trying to flirt with you and you can't really tell, then either she isn't a very good flirt, or you aren't very good at interpreting flirtatious behavior. In either case, I am here to help you un-weave this tangled web.

If you WANT her to be flirting but aren't sure she is, you approach her and ask her something like: "were you flirting with me just now?" If she replies with something along the lines of "well what do you think, big fella", and winks again, she was flirting with you.

If you DON"T want her to be flirting with you, pretend you didn't even see it.

Either way, you win.

Here's a little video flirting lesson. Winking is mentioned at the very end
