buy a DVD recorder, record that show you want to see, and see the show he/she wants to.

it's all about watching the show with him/her, the emphasis is not the show, but the one sitting next to you.

My wife and I have a TiVo.

We also don't watch a lot TV. She enjoys 90210.
I understand it's a throwback to her youth... but beyond that, I have nooooo idea why.

I like to watch Entourage.
She understands that it's a throwback to my youth... but beyond that, she doesn't understand how the relationship of the main characters reminds me of my own friends and a life I once lived (well, without a movie star anyway).

What do we do?
We record both and watch them when there is "nothing else on".

We don't watch a lot of TV. We watch a few shows. Those shows aren't on all of the time we want to watch TV so when nothing is on, we flip on the show that the other person enjoys and endure our time.

My husband and I are lucky--neither of us watch tv much at all. If we do, I usually let him watch whatever he wants. The only real exception to that is that I love HOUSE. Fortunately, he likes it too, so we rarely argue.

What I've taken to doing with my kids though, is sending them to the other living room to watch the other TV, or else I'll put my headphones on and work on the computer while they watch things I'm not interested in.

I'm more of a commercial nut. I am usually too busy to watch an entire television show, so I only glance up and watch commercials. I call them mini-tv, and there are some really good, funny commercials too!

Simple. We don't watch TV and spend the money on other entertainments! :)

However, if we had cable, we would most likely have a DVR and record what we want to watch and watch it whenever we wanted to. As far as watching TV together, sometimes you just have to sacrifice a little and grin and bear a show you don't like knowing all the while that you're going to make them do the same thing when it's your turn!

We play for it. Seriously. We're both board game nuts and we play board games most nights when I'm not glued to Mahalo or we're not...busy doing other things after the baby goes to bed. *Cough* So whoever is the current winner of whatever game we're playing gets control of the tv. Although sometimes I think he takes pity on me and puts on America's Next Top Model even when I'm losing just to cheer me up.

It's a good system though. Competition brings out the fun and adventure in television. You have to earn it!

Our favorite games right now:

Bananagrams
Carcassonne
Boggle

Maybe in my next marriage I will not have a TV in every room. Disputes or not, at least we would be discussing something. Sorry, off topic and it's too late to delete this. I couldn't resist!

Actually this can be taken as a poor solution to resolving the issue at hand.

The one who has the remote, rules! You gotta be kidding me. I'd rather read a good non-fiction book to her, as an example, "Daddy King and Me," you'll be glad you did!

To be honest, now we are in the digital age its so much harder to miss a program we want to see. Between the DVR and the Internet we'll get to see it eventually.

As to whats on the big screen... we share and know that if we miss it live today we can watch it on digital tape tomorrow.

A compromise is good, but when i had an SO and found time to relax, once i did I would fall asleep. TV is boring and after using the PC all day the last thing I want to do is stare at the tv.

If we have a dispute over what to watch, one of us (meaning him) can go in another room and watch something else. We usually agree on what to watch though...or he just suffers through HGTV a lot.
