How do you gracefully avoid people that you don't have much in common with?

I live a busy life and have to be selective with how I spend my free time. How do you gracefully avoid people that keep on calling you to make plans to meet, even though you don't return their phone calls and even though you don't have much in common? I'm referring to friendships and not dating.

I have been in the same boat and just tell them each time that I'm very busy and have plans for the day they want to go out. Sooner or later, though usually later, they'll back off.

This is so awkward, isn't it? Some people, no matter how many times you make excuses ("I've got to work, get my hair done, clean house, move to Mongolia") will just never take the subtle hints. I agree with Bunny on this one - you just keep telling them over and over that you're just too busy for socializing right now. Maybe throw in that if/when you have time, you'll get back to them - that puts the ball in your court.

Eventually they will likely give up.

I can relate, Camilla. Sometimes people just can't get the hint that most people can (yet another thing you don't have in common, it would seem).

Not at all saying that your hints aren't good enough, but perhaps try a more direct indirect approach (does that make sense?)... tell them you're absolutely swamped at this time of year and you'll get in touch with them "in a few months when things settle down". This will buy you some time, and hopefully they'll find someone else to pass their time with. This has worked for me in the past.
