If you were my really good friend and did not tell me, I would be praying I didn't have any enemies! Now, I must say that I am a people person. I have never gotten into office politics. I try to stay out of office gossip. And, I've never been made CEO.

This quote from Aristotle seems appropriate: ‘The desire for friendship comes quickly. Friendship does not.’

If your career is more important, don't tell your friend. If your friendship is more important, tell your friend. Accept the results.

Good luck.

Since I do not know how good a friend that person is to you, I don't think it is your job to tell that person before your boss opens his mouth. But assume that you are very close to that person, you two hang out outside of work and have worked and been friends over the years, you know his/her family, and he/she knows yours, then perhaps you can secretly give him a heads up. But you have to make your friend promise you that he/she would not reveal you to your boss.

No. You don't. The question of whether an employee is going to be made redundant often changes and they may not be told to go. It does happen. For example, a company saving money by cutting staff will also ( probably ) be loosing staff due to resignations. If that happens its one less person who has to be told to go. Their name is taken off the list and the person who resigned takes their 'place'.

This happened to a friend of mine - I was in the same position as you. Literally 10 minutes before his manager was going to give him notice, the manager was told of a resignation within the department and he could keep the person he was just about to let go. My friend was not fired that day.

I would have said something to them for nothing, causing all sorts of trouble. You just don't know what is going to happen so best leave it alone.
