I would not worry to much about it. Perhaps the person is setting it up strictly for business networking or some other very specific reason, or perhaps they just hit the wrong button.
The only way to know is to ask your friend the next time you see him or her.

I will ask my friend why s/he denies my 'friend request'. If s/he insists on not having me as a friend in facebook because s/he doesn't want me to know about his/her posts there then it's just okay. I can understand it but I will try to ask her to accept my request. The more, the merrier!

Don't upset yourself. There are plenty of good reasons to not friend someone that don't mean they don't like you. If you know the person well enough just ask them. If you don't know them well enough to to be comfortable asking, you are not close enough to take offense. Hope this helps.

I don't understand what the problem is. This is a real life friend, who I would suppose you have a real life relationship with. What do you care what they do or don't do on Facebook? People need to have some parts of their lives that they keep private. I only allow certain people on my FB page, and I actually unfriended the daughter of a friend, because I don't want her going back to her mother with whatever I say. There are things I discuss with my online friends that my real friends don't need to know about.
