Definitely a big no-no. First, no matter how kind a person is online, you still don't know much about him/her. There are still unknown facts about this person, or what if he/she's is not event telling you the right things. It's not good to doubt a person's personality but we don't know what's out there. Better safe than sorry. Second, spending so much for a person you don't know at all (plane ticket/s, accommodation, food and other expenses)? I guess it's too much. Why not spend the money for yourself or other people you know well.
But if you really want to meet the man/woman, make sure you are not alone. Make sure you're ready if ever something goes wrong. If you're capable enough to do a background check, do so. But still I advice you not to meet someone over the internet.
