I'm not a fan of professional sports of any kind. It reminds me of the roman gladiator pits only without the tigers. I bet if you added the tigers back, people would still watch. You know, the real life version of "The Running Man." So long as the masses are entertained...
I think they are all grossly over paid. That being said though, I don't think that all the money should go to the franchise owners either. If billions are being created through an organization, then the people doing the brunt of the work should get paid according to what they do and the service they perform for the organization, like in any business. I think that is sort of how it is done, though I might be wrong. (Well they are paid on what the franchise thinks they are going to be able to do for the team.)

When it come to professional sport, I have no quarrel with what athletes earn. I figure their talent and more importantly the demand to watch such talent makes their compensation a market issue.
If the market is there, they should earn what the market can bear.
The one area that I feel is often overlooked in terms of compensation are the officials. As one has seen in the not too distant past with the NBA, if an area should be examined to keep human temptation from compromising the integrity of a whole league, it is the officials.

Yes, the reason they get paid what they do is because of the amount of money they generate by playing. Before all this money went to the team owners until some agent finally figured out to base his request on income. Top teams fill seats and get merchandising why not take what you can. If the owners weren't making the money they would not pay what they do. Cable brought revenues through the roof for top teams.

I agree with Mar: let the market determine what super bowl players are "worth". Good thing it isn't up to me. I wouldn't give them a penny. I sure enjoyed hearing The Who at halftime, though!
