I'd suggest about $20-40.
I mean, it obviously depends on how long you've known this roommate and lived with them. If you've been thrown together in the past year or two as roomies, then a nice houseplant, a dvd, or a restaurant gift card would be nice and polite.
If you're closer with this roommate, good friends who share a lot together, then spend a little more to get something personal and sentimental. A piece of clothing, tickets to a minor event, or a keepsake.
But most importantly of all, only spend what you can afford. Your roommate will understand if you can only afford $5. That's the way the world goes, and it's not worth it for you to get into financial trouble over holiday gifts.

These would depend on some circumstances really:
-How much can you afford to spend for a gift
-How dear your friend is to you
-What gift would she prefer to have from you
-What is useful and enjoyable to your friend
Some consideration you have to think about to come up with your decision.
I normally base my gifts on what they want for christmas as long i can afford it.

The best ruleis to agree on exchanging gifts and agree on a number that you both can live with. That way neither of you feels pressured to spend more than you can afford and you both feel respected and cared for. My roommate and I once exchanged little gifts when we were really broke and it was something I still remember with a big smile years later.

I would say it depends on how much money you have too. If you are hurting right now for money and need to get a gift you can be creative. Get a gift card for a movie and dinner. Or you can go all out of you have a ton of money and buy a really expensive gift of something she or he really wants.

I would say less than $100, and definitely no more than you can afford. If you are super tight with your roommate, then you might want to spend a little bit more.
One idea that you can do if you don't have a whole lot of money but want to give a nice present is offer to do your roommate's chores for the week, or make a really nice meal for him/her. This speaks to your being roomies but also does not cost a lot.
I would also recommend talking to your roommate. Confirm that you definitely want to exchange gifts and then decide on the amount to be spent together.
