I wonder is it OK to show kids a casino so they can get used to the idea of gambling in a controlled environment?

Would it be something that would make them more or less likely to become compulsive gamblers?

Are there available studies on this?

What are your personal feelings? Have you done this as a parent or a child?

That all depends on how you want your kids to turn out. A controlled enviroment? As apposed to a bookie? Or betting your buddy $10 on a golf game.

Your best bet is to let your kid work a 40 hour week. And then if give you the money. Put a wireless camera in your glasses and let your kid sit in the car. Or just a hidded camera that can record on a hidden dvr on your person.

Then record your 1/2 hour at the casino. When you get home you both can watch the video. Or a better method is to invite the whole family to watch.

After viewing the "show" and when little Jonny askes for his $200 back. The money he worked all week mowing lawns for. You can reach in you pocket and pull out some lint. Hand it to him and say here you go.

Sometimes reality is best.

It really depends on how they will be oriented about it. They are kids for today so their mind can be easily stuffed with different influences. But as they grow old, their judgment become mature. It really depends on their decision if they are going to be compulsive gamblers or not.

Yes you can show them casino but always explain to them that casino is not like a fun game with their playmates. It is more of a game where people risk important things(time for the family, discipline, etc) and not only money. Give examples of possible consequences when engaging in gambling. This would help them to be discouraged.

What you can do today is to be a good example to them. If you are a gamer, try to lessen your habit of playing. As much as possible, don't let them know that you are playing in a casino. If ever caught by your child, always prepare an explanation that would not let him/her to be encouraged with gambling activities. You can tell them that you were just forced by some friends and you really didn't have a plan of gambling again. Something like that.

Guide your children always. If you think they are beginning to engage in such activity, always discourage them and give other alternatives like sports and valuable activities. Let them know that you will be disappointed if you caught them gambling. With proper guidance they will realize that what you're telling is what is good for them and you will not regret doing it.

I think the biggest danger is the unknown. From time to time we will have a poker night. My kids are allowed to participate if they want to. Gambling, to my kids, is no longer a taboo. They know what it is like to win and to lose. This whole thing started because I had invited a few friends over to play poker. Nothing big, nickles, pennies, dimes, and quarters. My daughter wanted to play and was 14 at the time. I explained to her that if she played she would run a chance of loosing her money and made sure that she truely understood. She decided to play and because of my warning to her only used a dollar of hers so that she would not lose everything. Well she didn't lose and actually won 2 dollars more. There have been other games that she did not win. She has learned through this experience about the wins and losses. She also will never play with everything she has.

I feel that when she is old enough to go to the casino's that it will be a fun thing and not an addictive thing because she has already been exposed to it.

I know that some people think that gambling is bad but I don't. The reason I don't agree is because I never gamble with money that I can't spare (bill money). Usually when I gamble it is on money that I have set aside specifically to use at the casino. And that is the was my daughter is also. The part of her money that she uses to play poker with, is change she set aside for these nights.

My mom used to take us kids skiiing in Lake Tahoe, Nevada every winter, starting when we were 6 and 3. Every coffee shop, convenience store, and gas station we went into had slot machines. She would give us a handful of nickels and turn us loose. We would play the slot machines while she chatted with her friends. Neither of us is a gambler today. It was just like video games, to us, but not as fun. It was probably cheaper than leaving us in the hotel room with a babysitter!
