When do you usually do your taxes?

We usually try to do our taxes as soon as possible. It usually happens the first week of February. Then I can be sure we got everything in the mail we needed. There is always a rush to get our refund. We are usually broke by now.

In the past I used to do my book keeping every month, i.e. filling in a spreadsheet and saving the receipts in order of date in a folder. Then in January I just gave the whole lot to an accountant who helped me getting the maximum refund out of it.

At the moment I really don't know what to do. I don't have expenses and a very low income. I live in Spain and my husband in Germany, so we probably should add my income to his income, but that's not certain either because I earned it living in Spain. Here in Spain I'm not a legal resident and I can't apply for residency even though I live here over 10 years, because I don't have a regular income of € 400.00 minimum which is required for this residency. So legally I'm still a tourist here.

Then I asked about income from the internet and the tax office just didn't want to know. I also asked an accountant and the advice was to do nothing as the income is too low.

Well, I think I have to wait until my regular internet income is higher than the permitted minimum for the "artists", i.e. writers, poets, actors, musicians etc. It seems they are an exception to the tax law as well.

Meanwhile I just keep the few receipts I have and keep the copies of my bank account and PayPal account handy, I can do no more.

We usually do our taxes in February. We also get money back and anticipate the refund. We have to schedule a day where my spouse and I are both off, which can take a while.

Last year we did our taxes online at Turbo Tax. We were happy with the refund and it was easier than we thought it would be. I like my spouse here to help, so it is not an all day affair. In the past we used to go to H & R Block. But now that we can do them ourselves, we will probably go that route again. Just a few weeks and we can get busy!

The refund will get socked away in our savings this year. Our savings is dwindling down, so that will be nice to put a big chunk back in.

I really procrastinate getting my taxes done, even though I usually get some money back. I have a business I have to file taxes on. So, me being super unorganized, it takes me about 2 or 3 full days just to add up receipts. Because I am getting low on money, and my parents are hurting financially, I might have to pony up and do my taxes as soon as possible this year.

I don't mind it too bad once I get started, it's just giving myself that extra push to begin. I have my taxes done at H & R Block. It costs a fortune because I have so many schedule cs and stuff. However, I get that audit protection and my preparer is awesome. It's just worth it to me. Before, I just did my own manually. It was super easy. I even have the capability to do it now, but I'm not aware of all the laws, deductions or even the bonuses. I can't even file yet, until eHow sends their paper work. I think I've received everything else.
