Would you dye your hair green-blue just before looking for a mortgage loan?

I was planning to dye my hair "enchanted forest" by manic panic as part of my Halloween costume this year, the shade is a blue green similar to the pic attached I've done before, but slightly more blue... BUT currently my husband and I are also trying to get approved for a small loan for a house. We are just waiting to get his credit score up another 20 points so we may end up having a bank meeting soon. Manic Panic blue based shades tend to last up to 6 weeks at least. I could just tell the loan officer that it was just for Halloween even though I tend to do weird colors often.

Do you think the green-blue hair would affect my loan chances? Would you dye it or make your Halloween costume less cool and skip it?

Bankers go by the numbers. Get your credit record, earning statements, down payment and other paperwork in line and the bank will loan the money. The house you are buying and the neighborhood it's in and the familiarity of the particular bank with that neighborhood also matters.
But hair color? You're not applying to work there. Besides, it sounds like you have in mind the color of US money. Bankers like that.

Are you applying for a loan on a website or face to face? If the latter I would hold off on the dye. This is a professional transaction, and while the color may or may not hurt your chances depending on the bank or banker, why risk it?

As a side note, why not just use a high quality costume wig? The really nice ones are not cheap but they look fantastic & they last forever.

Some of my friends have even died blond wigs to get the exact color they desire.

The only thing bankers love more than traditionally conservative hair colors are qualifying individuals with healthy credit scores.

My wife and I have a credit score of over 800, and we could jolly well ask the banker to dye HIS hair, don a clown suit and dance around a may pole with us, and he'd be asking "clockwise or counter clockwise?"

Qualifying borrowers in these hard times are welcomed with open arms in all sizes shapes and colors.

Maybe you can get the loan officer to reenact this favorite scene of mine:

I loved your answer, but I sure as heck don't have a score of 800! That's impressive. Mines around 730 my husbands right at 600 hence we can't even apply yet.

I would find a more temporary dye or wear a wig for your costume. It is important that you look professional when requesting a mortgage loan. You need to give the loan officer the impression that you are serious and professional so they will have more confidence in your ability to repay the debt. Another alternative would be to apply for a loan online rather than in person through a site like www.lendingtree.com. Then you would not have to be concerned about your personal appearance unless they require you to meet a loan officer in person prior to approval.

Here's a big reason I disagree: Intent and professionalism is never enough to get you a loan. And the lack thereof isn't reason enough to deny you either. Again (as I stated in my answer), many, MANY very successful businesswomen have non-traditional appearances. As long as the numbers are there, you're fine!

Let's put it this way:

You could have 4 noses, spoons for fingertips, and a bugle coming out of your bum. As long as you have a good credit score, and the numbers all add up, then that's all the bankers are going to care about.

Don't mistake this for a job interview, where you want to impress upon an employer that you have a clean, neutral appearance that will look nice for clients and your cubicle neighbors.

Bankers don't care what kind of impression you make on clients. They don't care if you are going to take care of the house well. They don't care if you you keep alien monkeys as pets and eat llama meat everyday.

All they care about is if you are going to make your payments!

Keep in mind that some very, very successful people (especially in the entrepreneurial world) have "wild" appearances. Sometimes this serves their business very well, in fact! So don't think that you're the first person with oddly-colored hair that your loan officer has met.

BUT...I would dress in a nice outfit merely as a sign of respect for the loan officer. Your hair is NOT disrespectful.

Happy coloring (from a purple girl to you!)

I also liked your answer, however I know for a fact they care more about if you can make your payments. If that was the situation I'd have had a house years ago. I think it's stupid the decision is based on more than income but meh, that's how the cookie gets eaten.

If you are worried that your credit score is right on the ledge between approval and non-approval, then do every little thing in your power to make it nudge over to the approved side, which means not dying your hair.

However, some banks will deal with mortgages without you even having to come in before they approve - they base it on credit score, history, employment longevity, income, and potential to repay the loan. I'm pretty sure your hair color doesn't affect that potential.

Because it is around Halloween, you do have the advantage of them thinking that's probably all it's about.

The only way I think personal opinion could sway it is if you were right on the boderline of not getting approval, and they used personal opinion to sway it -- otherwise, don't think it's gonna matter.

I think it's really important that you don't dye your hair. Could you simply wear a wig for Halloween instead? Of course the banker is going to try and look at the numbers and go by the books, but you have to ask yourself if you are sure your appearance will have absolutely no negative effect on their impression of you. A lot of this stuff is judgment calls. If they really like you but you are just under the limit, they can still give you the loan if they choose. If I were you, I'd focus on simply making the best impression possible.
