Well if something went wrong, and they refused to fix it, they are a horrible contractor and an even worse friend. I would much rather invite them to "help" me, have a few beers and work on it together. That way, you are getting to spend time with a friend and enlisting their expertise to help you solve a problem. If I were excellent in one certain area, I would have no problem helping out a friend. But that's me. I can understand that there are people that would be hesitant to ask for or lend their services out of respect for the profession.....but I value my friends and would do anything for them....time spent with good people is worth a day's pay in my opinion.

No... never ever. It's like selling a used car to a family member. There will ALWAYS be problems and then you will be made out to be the bad guy.
If you want to keep your friend/family, don't go into any deals with them. (In technical terms this is called a "dual relationship" and can get pretty ugly...)

Yes, I'd hire a friend. Any friend I hired would be a good enough friend to fix anything that went wrong. I usually watch workers closely enough to stop any serious mistakes before they happen. If something bad happened and I didn't catch it, I would probably feel bad for not noticing.
