American Express pulled a similar trick on a large number of customers several months ago due to their own poor financial health. I know of two Centurion card holders (yes, the Black Card) who had the credit limits on their accompanying Platinum cards cut to $1000. These are high net worth individuals.

Basically, don't take it personally. It's just a computer algorithm, and an algorithm that may have more to do with their own financial circumstances than yours. Be persistent and they should erase the charge. In fact, you may even get something out of them. I got a $20 gift card as an apology for a credit card mistake once.

Credit card companies are the scum of the earth. They will quadruple your interest rate with barely any excuse, such as you were one day late on your mortgage or some other bill that is not even related to the credit card.

I deal with these sorts of problems by never holding a balance on a credit card. I pay them off in full every month.
